Biography

Best known for his emotionally charged score for the Swedish art house horror hit Let the Right One In, the epic music for the Electronic Arts Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 5 video games, the adventure Kon-Tiki and numerous soundtracks for the films of Danish auteur Susanne Bier (In a Better World, After the Wedding, Things We Lost in the Fire), Swedish composer Johan Söderqvist enjoys a prolific international career in film, television and video games. His music for Columbia Pictures’ Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, is his first score for a Marvel movie.

Born in 1966 in Täby outside of Stockholm, Johan attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, studying composition and arranging. A versatile musician who was a keyboard player in various jazz and folk music groups, Johan toured extensively around the world before turning to film composition. His first score, for Agnes Cecilia, featured a strikingly beautiful piano theme that became a calling card for its composer early in his career. Today, Johan is known for his ability to write subtle, yet musically interesting, scores that gets under the skin of the film viewer, enhancing emotions without “writing on the nose”.

Among the many awards and nominations Johan has received throughout the years, two nominations for the European Film Awards (for Brothers and Let the Right One In), a UCMF Award at the Cannes Film Festival (Brothers), a Camille Award (The Emigrants) and three Amanda Awards (Troubled Water, King of Devil’s Island, The King’s Choice) stand out. His other credits include Nordic noir such as TV series The Bridge and the Department Q films, epic adventures such as Kon-Tiki and Amundsen, the Netflix drama Anatomy of a Scandal, ww2 drama The Last Vermeer and the Victorian era thriller The Limehouse Golem.

Johan Söderqvist is represented by Fortress Talent Management.
